Referrals
Crisis and Acute Referrals
Te Whare Marie does not provide acute assessments for new referrals. Please contact the Crisis Assessment and Treatment Team on (04) 494 9169 if you have serious concerns about yourself or a member of your whanau.
Access is via referrals from:
- General Practitioners
- Self referrals
- Schools
- Government agencies e.g Child, Youth and Family
- Other internal mental health and addiction services e.g. CAMHS, CATT, Te Whare o Matairangi
Referral Process
A referral to Specialist Maori Mental Health Service for assessment should be made if:
The person’s behaviour and or psychiatric history suggests that they may be suffering from:
- A psychotic disorder
- A cognitive behavioural disorder
- A dissociative disorder
- A personality disorder
- An anxiety disorder
- A mood disorder
- An adjustment disorder
- A somatoform disorder
- An impulsive control disorder
OR the person is referred under the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 1992 or Criminal Procedures (Mentally Impaired Persons) Act 2003
OR as a result of a disorder, a person is at risk of
- Suicide
- Entering dangerous situations because of impaired judgement
- Dangerous behaviour to others or damage to the property of others
OR the person is significantly disabled by a psychiatric disorder and is without appropriate support.
Exclusion Criteria
- Tangata whaiora/whanau that do not identify as Maori
- Tangata whaiora that decline consent for follow up (unless under the Mental Health (CAT) Act or CP(MIP) Act
- Out of our area e.g. Hutt Valley, or no fixed abode
- Tangata whaiora that primarily present with physical health problems or an eating disorder diagnosis
- Antisocial behaviour, including conduct disorder
- Te Whare Marie is unable to provide services for learning difficulties and psychological evaluations for educational requirements
- Tangata whaiora with head injuries (without a suspected or identified Axis 1 DSMIV diagnosis)
- Tangata whaiora whanau experiencing grief, anger management and violence issues
Te Whare Marie does not provide general counselling or parenting services.
